[CanineCancer] Rachelle: New member

Hi Rachelle -

I am a new member too & also a Boxer momma. I always knew Boxers were prone to mast cell (not what my guy has), and over the years have collected some information from other Boxer parents on how they helped treat the tumors. Thought maybe they would help you. I am copying & pasting from emails -

Tagamet & Benadryl used to shrink mast cell tumors.

If your dog is on any medication, you should always read the
PreCautions sheet.? Some meds cannot be combined with Tagamet
(Cimetidine). updated 7/6/08.

Dose for tumors:? 1 tab Tagamet (Cimetidine) and 1 tab Benadryl
(Diphenhydramine) caplet twice a day for 3 weeks.
Preventative Therapy: 1 tab Tagamet and 1 tab Benadryl caplet twice
a day for 2 weeks.I do this twice a year.

You can also google "boxers tagamet and benadryl"

Help with Tumeric

I started out using turmeric but then went to curcumin, which is the ingredient of turmeric that seems to have the anti-cancer properties. Curcumin is the ingredient that gives turmeric its bright yellow/orange color. Studies has shown that turmeric varies in the amount of curcumin it has in it, typically from 2 to 5 percent.

For my dog who had the melanoma (removed from the back of his tongue) and the mast cell (on his thigh, never removed after the discovery of the melanoma), I typically gave him 4 capsules a day, maybe 2 twice a day. It appeared to greatly slow his melanoma. It I think eventually got him, but over 2 years and 3 months after the specialty vet gave him a prognosis of only 2 months, to over 14 years of age (and maybe 15 or 16 or 17, depending upon just how old he was when I took him in over 12 1/2 years before). Also, his mast cell tumor, which was never removed, seemed to slow its growth and then eventually shrivel up by the time the melanoma finally got him. It did seem to stop it from spreading, as it never showed up any place else, and mast cell tumors are normally quite aggressive.

Hope it helps
