[CanineCancer] Re: Squamous cell carcinoma - nose cancer

Hi Cat,

My Border Collie was diagnosed with Squamous cell carcinoma at the end of December. Her mass is under her tongue at the base. Surgury was not an option for us as it would have been a total amputation of her tongue and there were some nodules that would not have been able to be removed. We heard nothing about an injectable drug as an option. Ginger received palliative radiation and chemo and still has a few chemo treatments. The radiation greatly reduced the size of the mass and has made her much more comfortable. She's doing well. Had one instance of nausea for a few days. I'm feeding her a cooked homemade diet and she's actually gained weight!

I'm guessing that the location of the squamous cell makes the treatment options different for each case. When you go to see the oncologist bring paper and pencil and questions. Write down answers so that you can refer back when making decisions. It can be pretty overwhelming especially if you have many options as we did. The doctors will typically suggest the best clinical solution, but you need to decide what's best for you and your dog.

Good Luck,

Gina and Ginger
