I can't help with information on the injection, I hope someone will be able to though.
I would second the suggestion to see a holistic vet - they will consider everything about your Golden in giving advice, the main idea seems to be keeping them as healthy as possible in order to fight whatever the illness is. I'm sure they would be very sensitive to your dog's digestion and any other issues.
