[CanineCancer] New Member Thank You!!!

First I want to apologize for the belated thank you in your very warm welcome for myself and my little man Kirby. It has been a very whirlwind couple of weeks. Two weeks ago Kirby was a happy, goofy little guy with a bad cough. Today is one week post surgery. His final path report came back as pulmonary adenocarcinoma, which is a really bad cancer to have. Given the size and extensive nature of Kirby's tumor, chemotherapy would not provide any benefit to him so we will do what we can for him for his remaining time. Kirby was doing very well, eating great, drinking well, doing all the normal doggie stuff and then Wednesday night took a bad turn. He was hospitalized on Thursday with a temperature of 104 and an extremely elevated white blood cell count. When he had his surgery they discovered that his tumor was surrounded by alot of necrotic tissue and pus so his surgeon was not surprised to see an infection pop up even though Kirby was on antibiotics. So he went back on IV fluids and antibiotics. I went up to see him last night and to feed him dinner, which he ate for me no problem. He looked much better and the report from the vet this morning is that he is up and bright eyed and looking at them from inside his little cage. I said he's probably saying "Okay, first I really have to pee and second I'm starving so make with the grub!!" He constantly amazes me with how strong he is and what a fighting spirit he has. We are hoping that he can come home today but it probably wouldn't hurt him to be on the IV meds for one more day.

We do have a holistic vet in our area and I'm thinking of getting a consult with her once Kirby is all recovered and ready to travel again. She's about 1.5 hours away so he'll need to be feeling good to take the trip. I'm also looking at some different foods for Kirby and some supplements. We are going to do everything we can to keep Kirby as happy and as healthy as possible for as long as he chooses to hang around with us.
